Neutral state - The Foundation of Connection

n this section, we deepen the understanding of the neutral state and how connection arises from the dog toward you—not the other way around. Neutral cannot be “done” or pushed onto the dog. True connection begins when you stop trying and start receiving what is already present in the dog: clarity, calm, and presence.
When you let go of goals, past experiences, and expectations, a space opens where the dog can teach you. Synchronization begins naturally. You are no longer creating connection—connection arises because you are available to be met.
The first step is to accept this moment exactly as it is. As your body settles and mind quiets, you notice that neutral is not something you build, but something that appears when obstacles fall away.
Synchronization is not a mental decision but a movement of the nervous system. The dog moves in its own rhythm, and you begin to feel it. When you are open, this rhythm flows into you, gently changing both your state and the dog’s.
This is the foundation of the course: returning to the moment so the dog can meet you—and offer its calm. From this connection, everything else grows.

Returning to the present moment – the bridge to connection

Neutral is not just rest or passive being. It is a dynamic foundation where body, breath, and nervous system come back into alignment. In this state, you don’t simply relax—you return to the clarity from which deeper connection with the dog can arise. Neutral is a starting point, not an end result.
In this section, I guide you through a practice to recognize your own neutral. The essence is not doing something “right,” but allowing layers—urgency, roles, expectations, and effort—to gently fall away. As the body softens and the mind settles, you begin to notice a state where nothing needs to be forced. That is neutral.
As you find this place, you start to feel it: the breath drops, muscles no longer pull you in any direction, and the inner voice quiets. It is not emptiness, but a benevolent state of being where the dog can meet you openly. The dog trusts this state more than anything else.
The purpose of this practice is not to change you, but to return you to what has always been present. From here, we can move forward—toward how the dog’s neutral begins to flow into you and how synchronization naturally emerges between two nervous systems.

Introduction to the meditation exercise

In this section, I guide you through a meditation where neutral is not drowsiness or passive “switching off,” but a living, dynamic centerline. We explore a state where you are awake, present, and at ease at the same time—the same life force from which you will later approach your dog.
We begin by finding a genuinely comfortable position. Meditation is not a posture or technique, but a state where you feel at ease. If your dog is nearby, it can move, sniff, and check that everything is okay. You practice non-reactivity: allowing the dog to be, staying calm, and trusting you don’t need to respond to every signal.
In the practice, you move with the breath through the body—into the legs, arms, neck, and head—allowing sensations without judgment. Thoughts and feelings can arise and pass like water off a duck’s back. The question “what is a child?” invites a sense of openness and curiosity, which you gently bring from the head into the heart. From the heart, the breath expands through the body, to the skin and slightly beyond—like resting inside a soft, gentle bubble.
When you find a sense of ease, calm, or quiet joy, stay with it. This is the state where you become receptive to what the dog is communicating. From this neutral, we will begin to approach the dog.

Meditation exercise

A dog is highly sensitive to your state of mind and responds instantly. When you are calm, present, and grounded, the dog feels safe. If you carry tension, uncertainty, or a need to control, the dog reflects it back. That’s why finding your neutral is not just a practice—it is the foundation of connection.
Synchronization means the dog adjusts its state to yours. It does not come from techniques or trying to influence the dog, but from openness, authenticity, and the absence of expectation. When you are truly yourself, the dog naturally finds rest in you. It does not seek perfection—it responds to honesty.
The key insight is this: synchronization is not something you do, but something that happens. When you find your neutral, the dog finds its own, and these states begin to resonate. From here, connection, interaction, and even treatment unfold naturally. You cannot fake this. Artificial signals—like forced yawning—do not work. The dog senses what is real.
When synchronization is present, communication happens without words—through breath, body, and feeling. The more you practice, the deeper the dog’s trust becomes. This is the essence of connection: two nervous systems resting together.

Many of us enter the dog’s personal space too quickly, patting from different angles and trying to “get contact.” The dogs’ reactions are clear: they tense up, withdraw, and appear confused. The dog has no time to sense you before touch—and connection is lost before it even begins.
A dog always perceives your presence first, and only then your touch. When we go straight to the body, we bypass the dog’s natural way of communicating. That’s why neutral and synchronization are essential before touch can be received.
When you pause, settle into yourself, and allow the dog to sense you from a distance, it can evaluate: “Is this person calm? Are they safe?” When the dog feels this, its body softens and connection opens.
The right way to approach a dog always begins with state, not with the hand. When you carry neutrality, the dog comes toward you on its own terms. Only then can you meet it gently and touch with awareness. From this place, connection forms naturally—and the dog can truly receive you.

Initiating contact with the dog on human terms – no synchronization!

In this section, you will learn how the neutral state becomes visible in the dog’s behavior. You now have the first key: the ability to return to your body, your breath, and your inner neutral. This is not just a quiet exercise, but a skill you can carry into everyday life—especially when meeting your dog.
In the video, you’ll see dogs remaining in their own space, not rushing toward the human. This is the starting point we want to respect. When Markus approaches, he does not move straight toward the dog or fix it with a direct gaze. He moves slightly past, gives space, and keeps his focus soft. Even a human’s presence can create pressure, which is why neutrality is essential—the dog immediately senses tension, uncertainty, or neediness.
The right approach always begins with state, not touch. When you respect the dog’s space and allow it to choose when connection happens, the dog relaxes and its body softens. In Markus’s example, the dog notices him, evaluates the situation, and eventually chooses to approach. The beauty of this moment is that connection arises from the dog toward the human—not from the human trying.
Touch is offered with sensitivity: not leading with the hand, but softly from the outer edge, so it doesn’t feel invasive. This allows the dog to receive contact at its own pace.
